Can deaf people have friends? Why not! We all need friendship in our life; it’s only the true friends that count.
During high school I had a lot of difficulty with friendships and social life; it was a big step up from primary school. Back then, there were seven girls in our year group, I had one best friend; H… and we are still very close today! I don’t know what I’d do without her. Everyone from the primary school went to the local high school, whereas I went to a local state boarding school (as a day student).
Just a short post….
Tonight, I was helping my boyfriend with his College work, he’s doing a Deaf Studies degree. Some of the things they learn/research is quite fascinating and I learn something new about deaf people all the time.
So, last week was the official Deaf Awareness Week, and I know this it’s a late update, but I’d like to share a story!
During Year 12, I was a victim of discrimination from one of my teachers, who told me face to face; “you shouldn’t do (this subject) because you’re deaf”. This set me back quite a bit, and I was very hurt and couldn’t believe someone could say that to me. I realised I’m not the only one as deaf people are discriminated all the time, due to our ‘invisible disability’. Therefore I wanted to do something about it.
Hi there! Welcome to ‘Day in the life of a deafie’.
This blog is just a space for me to express my thoughts, rants and experiences about deafness, and what it means to me.
A little bit about me; I’m 18 years old, I’m profoundly deaf in both ears and have been since birth. I’ve just finished my A Levels at a mainstream school and I will be starting a marketing apprenticeship at the end of the summer! (More info on the ‘About Me’ page).
